California Technical Bulletin 133: Flammability Test Procedure for Seating Furniture for Use in Public Occupancies (CTB 133) is the most rigorous upholstered furniture flammability test in the world, the foundation for open-flame furniture testing requirements in most states, and the basis for international testing standard ASTM E-1537.
Nearly all of our products can be CTB 133-compliant with the right combination of foam and fabric. Ava, Florabella, and Pause are exceptions and cannot meet CTB 133 guidelines.
Non-133 foam needs flame-retardant additives to comply with CTB 133 guidelines, whereas 133 foam already contains additives to improve flame-retardant abilities and comply with CTB 133.
We apply Z211, a Kevlar fabric, to the back of the cover fabric before upholstery. It creates a flame barrier between the cover fabric and the padding.
Fabrics are sent to an outside vendor, treated with chemicals to improve their flame-retardant abilities, and returned to us for upholstery. Only certain fabrics require this treatment to pass CTB 133.
Nemschoff products are designed and tested to rigorous standards of ANSI/BIFMA X5.4 Lounge and Public Seating. These standards are intended to provide manufacturers, specifiers, and users with a common basis for evaluating the durability and structural adequacy of lounge and public seating.
Our standard seating tests include dropping 125 pounds on the seat over 100,000 times and impacting each seat with 225 pounds, which is dropped from a height of six inches. Additionally, each seat and back is pushed with a lateral force between 250 and 300 pounds simultaneously. Our standard chairs have a weight capacity of 350 pounds unless otherwise stated on the product page. In addition to BIFMA testing to the appropriate ANSI/BIFMA Standard (x5.4 – Lounge and Public Seating or x5.11 – Large Occupant Office Chairs) Nemschoff performs additional testing for occupant weight ratings above 350 lbs. For a weight rating of 500 lbs. the chair is tested with a static load of 750 lbs. and must be serviceable after the BIFMA x5.4 dynamic drop proof load of 300 lb. is dropped from 6 inches. In the case of multiple seating, the dynamic drop tests are performed individually in each seat location as required by BIFMA x5.4, and the unit must remain serviceable upon completing the tests. Static load testing is performed with the rated load placed simultaneously in each seat location. Our Plus Seating is available in extended seat widths and able to withstand static loads of 700 to 1,000 pounds. Refer to product page ‘Features’ for weight capacities.
