Cindy Carpenter-Smith (Interior Design, Texas Christian University) has been in the furniture industry since 1987. Her studio is based in Dallas.
Merging the disparate worlds of design and hospitals is a challenge that has intrigued Cindy throughout her career. “My goal is trying to hit an aesthetic that the designer will be attracted to and yet have it very functional for the hospital and the patient who will be using the furniture,” she says. She is inspired by “finding and tripping on the holes in the industry--being able to see the trends and supplying an answer to those trends.” To inform her work, she frequently talks with healthcare designers and caregivers. She explains, “I hear their frustrations, and I try to design around what I hear, based on what we think the industry actually needs.”
