Brian Kane (University of Bridgeport, Connecticut) established his San Francisco studio in 1989, focusing on his favorite product to design: seating.
Brian believes that designing for healthcare is no different then designing for any other environment. “The solutions have to be well designed, inviting, functional, and aesthetically right,” he says. For example, with his Steps lounge, he aimed to meet people’s emotional needs for both privacy and openness, using the seating form to create inside and outside areas, while stepping up back heights to add architecture and seclusion. Finding the right material for the right job is the driver for all of his work. He also finds ongoing inspiration in cities, saying “Observing the people, their pace, their energy, how they interact--that all energizes me.”
