David Ritch (Industrial Design, University of Cincinnati) and Mark Saffell (Interior Architecture, Ringling College) have been designing for the healthcare, contract, and residential markets for 15 years. Their studio is based in Venice, California.
David and Mark approach healthcare design challenges with an open mind, looking for insights and inspirations anywhere from a button-down collar on a dress shirt to the way grocery carts nest together for space-saving storage. “The challenge is to recognize them when they appear and incorporate them appropriately into a solution,” says David. 5d’s typical process involves recognizing a problem, understanding its essential components, and studying ways to alter the situation through good design. Their work strives to achieve a subtle balance that is grounded in function, expressive in form, and emotionally evocative.
