Emory Crawford Long Hospital
Emory Crawford Long Hospital, a part of Emory
Healthcare, is a 533-bed acute care teaching
facility located in midtown Atlanta. The hospital
offers a full range of services, which include
general medicine, maternal and infant care,
orthopedics and surgery. It is one of 22 acute
care hospitals located in Atlanta where the
healthcare market is extremely competitive.
Crawford Long recently completed construction
on a new 20-story building. Included is a six-
story, 500,000-square-foot diagnostic and
treatment center topped by a 14-story,
365,000-square-foot medical office tower. The
entire structure consolidates outpatient services
from several buildings and places physician
offices directly above hospital services to
increase patient convenience. The new hospital
features a heart center, including invasive and
non-invasive procedures; a comprehensive
maternity center; a new emergency department
three times its former size, with state-of-the-art
radiology services nearby; two floors of surgical
services; and convenient dining and family
waiting areas.
The hospital worked with HKS of Dallas to create
an upscale interior that sets it apart from all other
hospitals in the local market. The hospital's
primary message, "first-class care in a first-class
facility," is clearly evident throughout its stately,
yet warm and comfortable environment.
Because Crawford Long and HKS wanted the 11
labor and delivery rooms and 36 postpartum
rooms to feel like "home," the radiant warmer and
all support services in the room needed to be
hidden. The project team knew they had to
install custom-built headwalls to accomplish their
goal so they turned to Nemschoff. "We chose to
work with Nemschoff because we knew that they
could deliver the custom look we desired. We
also knew that they could engineer a headwall
that would beautifully complement the room and
still meet all of the
hospital's specifications," commented
Franne Neild of
HKS. The headwall
unit contains medical gases, electrical
outlets, emergency
communications,
lighting, and an infant radiant warmer that pivots
into place for use.
In addition to the headwall units, Nemschoff
armoires, wardrobes, SleepOver® settees and
gliders are used throughout the project. All of the
products coordinate beautifully to clearly deliver
the facility's primary message of "first-class care
in a first-class setting."
"Nemschoff was very responsive throughout the
entire process and always listened to our
feedback. They made sure we were happy with
the end result before it was installed." said Jack
Morford, project director. He added, "Our
patients are quite impressed with their
surroundings and our staff enjoys working in
such attractive rooms."
