Avera Behavioral Health Center
The Avera Behavioral Health Center (ABHC), located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is a state-of-the-art 110-bed behavioral health hospital designed by BWBR Architects that includes five inpatient wings as well as an adjoining outpatient medical clinic and medical office building. "The new hospital design sets a dramatic balance of an open, soothing and comfortable environment in a lock-down facility. It addresses the broad needs of children, adolescents, adults and the elderly while trying to break down the stigma of fear, shame, isolation and hopelessness of mental illness," stated Don Thomas, Principal at BWBR.
This healthcare facility worked closely with Interstate Office Products (IOP), also located in Sioux Falls, to ultimately provide an interior atmosphere devoted solely to the comfort and safety of patients. With five separate units in the hospital, including Child, Adolescent, Adult, Adult Acute and Senior Care, the goal of both ABHC and IOP was to create a unified change in finishes throughout the different wings. Furniture generally remains the same throughout while colors and patterns reflect each unit’s overall demographic. The furniture needed to be durable and appropriate for use in a behavioral health-type setting. "We were posed a challenge by Avera to provide furniture that was both aesthetically pleasing and functionally durable for use in a behavioral health facility. The breadth of line, high quality construction, ability to customize casegoods to fit the hospital’s safety specifications and warranty made Nemschoff a sure fit for this project," stated Kim Ducommun, Interior Designer at IOP.
In order to meet the specifications required at ABHC, IOP designed the furniture and finish selection using Nemschoff seating and casegoods products. Small, medium and bariatric Cities® lounge seating was used in the general waiting areas as well as in patient day rooms. Nemschoff standard and special wheelchair height tables were used in dining, activity and conference rooms along with Vega seating products. The day rooms and family conference rooms were similarly designed with Nemschoff standard and special wheelchair height tables; however, these rooms feature Golda seating products.
Gary Gaspar, Dealer Principal at IOP, also commented, "Our experience working with the Avera Behavioral Health Center and Nemschoff has been extremely rewarding. It was a great opportunity to partner with them to provide a solution that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional for this unique facility." By collaborating with Nemschoff, IOP and ABHC were able to specially design products for specific uses in the facility. These products include high use casegoods, wardrobe cabinets with tamperproof hardwood and sloped tops, desk tops to fit cubby spaces and platform beds with moisture proof bottoms. Each of these products provide ABHC with more specialized patient care in the appropriate areas.
"Working with Interstate Office Products and Nemschoff has been extremely beneficial to the interior of our facility. We plan to continue to work with Nemschoff and IOP as its dealer again in the future, especially since this project was so successful in meeting our needs," commented Dick Molseed, Senior Vice President of Environmental Services at ABHC.
